Release

I’ve been bound by an invisible chain. The links were slowly added one by one over the years. They were not of my choosing, placed there by circumstance. By the chance of who I was with. By what I allowed them to leave me with. They shed their burden, with neither them nor I knowing it was being transferred to me.

At first I didn’t notice. I was being subtly restrained, unable to detect the steady decrease in oxygen, the ability to be fully at ease. The chain grew longer, increasing its ability to constrict my chest, increasing the weight it placed upon me. And then the final links came into place. The chain fully surrounded my torso, its weight bearing down on me fully.

I tried to escape, tried to push and pull. I wanted to be free again. I wanted to be at ease. I want to be able to breathe fully again. But the chain would not loosen. It would not let me free.

I had to surrender – and I did. Surrendered fully to the weight of the chain, to the burden of each link. I stopped fighting, I let go. And as I did, the chain released its grip and fell to the ground. For I had been holding it in place the whole time.
